Answering How Many Keywords You Should Use For SEO
There’s not one right answer for this per se. Every specialist will have their own way of doing things; however, there are some fundamental rules that must be followed.
For instance, keyword stuffing used to be a great tactic back in the early days of Google. All you had to do was put loads of keywords on your webpage and ta-da your website would appear for the listed words!
Moving forward to the present, times have changed. This method can negatively impact your site’s rankings, especially if you fill-up the page with irrelevant words that have no connection to what the page is about.
From our experience at SEO Luton, a webpage should have 2-7 main keywords, which is exactly what we’ve done on this blog page! What you typically see is the more content on the page, the more keywords that are added.
So now you know what to aim for, how do you go about finding them? There are a couple of different ways to find keywords that searchers and typing in:
- SEO keyword tools (Semrush, Ahrefs, Moz)
- Google predicted searches
- Google keyword planner (used mainly for PPC but helpful for SEO too)
Google and Bing have become very sophisticated over the years as technology has advanced. One clever feature they’ve added is the ability to rank webpages to keywords you’ve not even added.
But how does this work? Well, search engines will identify the keywords you’ve told them you want to rank for, and they will find similar phases and keywords that link to the subject you’re talking about too – as a result, you show up in even more search results!
If you’ve tried to give SEO a go and unfortunately fell victim to adding too many keywords to your pages, it’s not too late! We would recommend going through every page that you want to appear in search results and removing keywords that are irrelevant to the topic. Plus, if there are way too many of them, we suggest picking the best ones and getting rid of the rest.
